About Potash Barns

Potash Farm was originally a 15 acre working smallholding. It has been a private house for the last 30 years.
 
It was built in the 1480's as a "Hall House" and most of the originally structure remains, including a thatched roof. The barn in it's current structure was probably built at the same time, although during the excavation four foundation timber posts were found suggestion an earlier more medieval building had been there. The Cart Lodge was probably an 18th century addition.
 
Although the house was sound, the Barn and the Cart Lodge were falling into disrepair. It was not viable to renovate the buildings for the sake of having extra rooms or storage, so the logical step was to create holiday accommodation, but with style and quality. Thus, in 1998 the plans for Potash Barns were born. Construction started in September 2001 and was completed by the end of July 2002. In fact the first visitors arrived on July 27th!

In October 2007 the Farm was sold to the current owners David and Claire Hendrick with their three girls Grace, Alice and Jessie. David and I have totally transformed the exterior of Potash Barns, we hope for the better. We have filled in 3 ponds for safety reasons, had new sandstone patio's laid, had drains put in and are always painting and decorating.

The Potash Barns complex consists of three self-contained holiday homes finished to a high standard and rated as a 4 star by the English Tourist Board each year. All barns are fully equipped with modern appliances, excellent range cookers and very comfortable furnishings. Each home sleeps 4 people comfortably and can adequately stretch to 6 people with the use of sofa beds, or cots for babies.

The original was divided into Goat Willow Barn at one end, and Old Oak Barn at the other. In between there is a Communal Hall, with a large woodburner in the fireplace. It retains the feel of the barn's original threshing floor. Ideal for large parties.
 
To the north across the farmyard, the barn is faced by The Cart Lodge. This building was completely renovated, and provides very comfortable, single story accommodation, ideal for less mobile guests. Again this can sleep up to 6 people.

The layout of the complex allows for both individual privacy, but also the space to mingle with others, and has proved to be perfect for large group bookings, or families who have taken all three homes as a block booking on many occasions.

Outside, the farmyard is kept clear of vehicles to allow children to play or cycle in safety. We have a play area where we have a netted trampoline, football goal, swings etc. We also have a separate games room with table tennis, table football, darts and a pool table. A few bikes are usually available, boule set and cricket set to borrow.


We have expanded on the animal front too as they are always a hit with our guests. Our pets include a pony called Moonie, pygmy goats, chickens, lambs and geese. All our animals are fenced in for safety but we always encourage our guests to help feed our animals and collect eggs when supervised. They are all friendly and are an invaluable treat for children!
 
We can provide meals on arrival to make the beginning of your stay easier. The cost obviously depends on what you request. Just ask.

Potash Barns Location

We feel we are very lucky to be situated in a tranquil spot in the heart of the mid Suffolk countryside. From here you have access to the Heritage coast boasting Southwold, Aldeburgh, Snape, Dunwich, Minsmere and Woodbridge. Felixstowe and Yarmouth are a little further away, but easily accessible. We are midway between Norwich and Ipswich, and well situated for Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Needham Market.
